Sea Lantern Studio Publishes Inside the Floating City

A Hybrid Work of Memoir and Lived Field Guide by Vega Mare,

with Book Design by Jihye Heo

Sea Lantern Studio announces the publication of Inside the Floating City, a hybrid work of maritime nonfiction by writer and former senior ship officer Vega Mare.

Structured as both lived memoir and practical guide, the book traces a progression through shipboard life, from first entry and early orientation to leadership, crisis, and long-term adaptation, using personal experience as the lens through which workplace systems, hierarchies, and organizational realities are revealed.

Across five parts, Inside the Floating City follows the arc of a modern seafaring career: before boarding, first entry, life on board, advanced survival, and what is carried home. Through this structure, the cruise ship emerges not simply as a setting, but as a complex working city governed by time, rank, informal politics, and continuous coordination across multinational teams.

Rather than separating narrative from instruction, the book allows understanding to accumulate through lived detail. Episodes of personal experience sit alongside moments of practical orientation: how teams form and fracture, how authority is exercised and resisted, how pay, health, safety, and movement are managed, and how individuals learn to remain functional and human inside a system that never fully stops.

The book's visual identity and design were created by Korean designer Jihye Heo, sought out deliberately for the principles her practice embodies: yeobaek, the use of negative space where emptiness carries meaning; a-gyeong, an aesthetic of natural, unforced beauty; and taegeuk, the balance of opposing forces expressed as structural precision and open, breathing space. Designer Heo's approach shaped the final form of the book in ways integral to how it reads and feels.

For new and aspiring crew, Inside the Floating City functions as a grounded companion to shipboard life, offering context, expectation, and orientation that rarely appears in formal training. For professional and institutional readers, it provides an interior view of organizational structure, leadership practice, and human dynamics within a closed, high-density workplace. For general readers, it presents a rare, immersive account of modern seafaring shaped by discipline, rhythm, and lived experience.

Inside the Floating City is published by Sea Lantern Studio and is available in digital, paperback, and hardback editions.
